In order to understand how hypnosis works, it is important to understand how your minds work… If you think about an iceberg…the ‘tip’ is the part that would represent the conscious mind. The rest of the iceberg, under the surface, is the subconscious and unconscious mind that represents who we really are.

The conscious mind is where we spend most of our time.  It is our analytical, logical, part. It makes decisions based on rational, logical information. Another part of the conscious mind is our willpower.  It is not very effective against our subconscious mind... our conscious mind says don’t eat that cookie, while the hand, directed by the subconscious, stuffs it into the mouth. It also functions as a kind of spam filter for information going into the subconscious mind. However, until age 8, (some say 5 years, other think 10) our conscious mind is not developed and we are like sponges in that we believe everything we see or hear. This is often where fears or misconceptions take root and ‘program’ us to feel and respond to situations with anxiety or fear that can plague us for the rest of our lives.

If it is not logical, the conscious mind won’t ‘believe’ it or allow it in to the subconscious where our beliefs reside. The conscious mind also contains what we call our short term or working memory. That's the memory we use every day.

The level below the conscious mind is called the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is extremely powerful and interesting. The subconscious mind decides, and the conscious mind provides…the most powerful part of our mind is the subconscious level, below our awareness. It actually is responsible for who we are, what we believe and how we behave...for better or worse. It has been ‘programmed’ since birth through all our life experiences and all our senses.

The subconscious mind has several functions. One of the duties of the subconscious is control of the body mechanisms. I often refer to this as the unconscious mind for clarification purposes. It regulates the autonomic nervous system, controlling every organ and gland. Thank goodness we don’t have to remember to breathe or control the flow of blood through our body.

The subconscious mind contains all our memories and past learning. Unlike the conscious mind that can only do one or two things at a time, and only pay attention to one or two things at a time, the subconscious is much like a video camera it seems that we record everything it receives through all its senses. It behaves as if a motion picture is being made. It records with sound effects and with all the other senses registering, not only sight and hearing, but touch, smell, and taste as well.  These memories are stored in little bundles in the subconscious mind and it only takes a very small trigger to unravel the bundle and awaken a memory or feeling creating a  ‘déjà vu’ or a ‘familiar’ sensation.

Most people have very few conscious memories of things occurring to them before the age of eight years. Now and then, there may be a very early memory, but often it is something we were told about by our parents.  We ‘believe’ it is the real memory. Everything that happened to us is in our subconscious memory in the greatest detail. We can consciously forget, but the subconscious never forgets.  We often bury the memory in order to protect ourselves from the painful experience but it still continues to affect us in many ways. Even if we can't recall everything at the conscious level, we never really forget anything.  That is one of the causes of anxiety…a subconscious memory of a frightening experience.

Habitual behavior is a function of the subconscious mind. Really most of our habits aren't good or bad they are just utilitarian habits. We automatically respond in a certain fashion when something happens. For example, when the telephone rings, we don't look at it and wonder what it is; we automatically pick it up and answer it.

Our subconscious mind controls our emotions. We wouldn't want to be without our emotions, but sometimes our emotions get us into trouble. When we feel intense emotion, we tend to deal with the particular situation from our subconscious mind and often the conscious mind is clueless as to the reason for the feeling or behavior. For example…you've dealt with a situation emotionally, and then after the situation was over, when the analytical conscious mind took over, you heard yourself thinking, "Now why did I say that? Why did I do that?"

Another important job of the subconscious mind is to protect us against danger…real… or imagined. Something imagined by the subconscious mind feels real and it can't tell the difference. Therefore it reacts as if it is a real danger and its job is to protect us with an anxious feeling. This part of the mind is always aware and functioning, whether you are awake or asleep. The mother of a baby may be sleeping soundly, but at the first whimper or cry from her child, she will instantly awaken. Her subconscious has said, "Come on, wake up! Something may be wrong with the baby." If you inadvertently touch something hot, your inner mind sends messages instantly to the muscles of your arm, and you snatch your hand away before you can think and analyze the situation. Sometimes the subconscious is guarding you from harm and danger that no longer exists and this is sometimes in the form of causing feelings that feel like illness or sometimes causes self-destructive behavior… i.e. hair pulling, panic attacks, drug or alcohol use.

There is another part of the conscious mind. This is called the critical factor of the conscious mind. Think of this part of your conscious mind as an employee of the subconscious. Its job is to stop, to put on hold like a red traffic light, any suggestion of change that we give ourselves or receive from an outside source. It stops it. The critical factor is like the rudder of a ship. It can keep you on course and is the pilot of all your inhibitions. It sends such signals as: "I can't," "I won't," or ""I haven't been able to before, so I can't now." It needs to be overcome when it paralyzes you into a habit. When healthy caution becomes a fear or a phobia it works against you. Ideally, your critical factor filters out what is illogical or unrealistic, and helps you set realistic goals. But… because the critical factor responds to the subconscious, and because the subconscious is protective, the critical factor does not always work to our benefit.

Hypnosis is a state of intense focused concentration. It is a natural way of accessing the subconscious. It is a form of communication that allows you to communicate between your conscious and subconscious minds. If properly used, it is a means of changing unwanted habits, understanding unwanted feelings and relieving long lasting stress or anxiety. A hypnotherapies/hypnotist is the one who guides you into a highly relaxed state called ‘trance’. Using a variety of techniques to bypass the critical factor the conscious, analytical, outer mind to reach the subconscious, intuitive, inner mind, which contains all the answers. Hypnosis occurs when your conscious mind is persuaded to take a break. It is very similar to going to the movies. Logically it is a room with a large white, flat screen. As soon as the lights go down and the music begins, your conscious mind steps aside and you ‘believe’ things on the screen are real in that they create many emotional responses from fear to sadness to hysterical laughter. Hypnosis works a lot like going to the movies except the hypnotist creates the environment that allows you to be open to their suggestions.

We have all experienced the hypnotic state but may not have been aware of it. Natural trance occurs when drivers are so preoccupied with something that they arrive at their destination without and conscious memory of the stops, turns etc. Or…when engrossed in watching TV that you don’t realize when people enter or leave the room. Because being in trance is such a familiar feeling, some people question whether they were truly hypnotized after their first hypnotic session.

Hypnosis induced by a hypnotist/hypnotherapies is often not what you expect it to be. Your body is very relaxed and all of your five senses are more intense than they are right now. Hypnosis is not in any way harmful, but it is sometimes a beginning hypnotic subject has some reservations…the most common questions are due to misconceptions about hypnosis. Some people feel that when a person is in hypnosis, that person is asleep. The word "hypnosis" stems from Hypnos, the Greek word for sleep. However, people who experience hypnosis are not actually sleeping - far from it. They may appear to others to be asleep, but they can think, talk, open their eyes, respond to suggestion, and move in any way. EEG readings, taken on people during hypnosis show a high level of alpha wave activity that indicates a relaxed yet attentive brain.

Some people are concerned that they won't emerge from hypnosis. Anytime you want to emerge from hypnosis, you can….all you have to do is have the slightest thought that you don't want to be in this relaxed state anymore, and instantly it's over and you're back to your normal awareness. Just like turning on the lights at a movie theater. Even if the hypnotist went away and left a subject in hypnosis, the subject would either return to full consciousness on his or her own or would enter a sleep and awaken after a pleasant nap.

Some people are concerned that they will reveal all their deep, dark secrets when they are in hypnosis. The truth is ...  if those deep dark secrets are creating your unwanted behaviors or anxiety, you are best served by getting them out…. However, while you are in hypnosis, you are always in control of what you choose to do or say. If you don't want to tell me something, you won’t. If you do, however, I am bound by the same confidentiality rules as other medical professionals.

Another powerful misconception is that the hypnotist can control you and make you do something you don’t want to do. In reality, you are always in control, hyper-alert and concentrating at a high level. In this mental state, you may have the session structured by a hypnotist, but the choice of whether to cooperate or not yours alone. Stage hypnosis often creates a fear that people are under the control of the hypnotist, however, these people volunteered and came for the expectation they would cooperate. Not everyone is a good stage subject. Those volunteers came to have fun and don’t mind being laughed at.

There is really only one form of hypnosis…that is… self-hypnosis. You don't need me in order to go into a beautiful, deep state of hypnosis. You don't need me to give you suggestions of positive change in any area of your life...you can do that all by yourself. The reason you go to a hypnotist is because you don't know how and you are feeling stuck…like you need help.  If you allow me to be your guide, I'll show you how to place yourself in a beautiful state of hypnosis, experiencing physical relaxation and mental alertness.

Hypnosis requires cooperation and consent state by you. You must allow things to happen. Anyone who has average or above average I.Q. and wants to be hypnotized can go into a hypnotic trance state. The only thing that keeps a person from going into that beautiful state of physical relaxation and mental alertness is if they have a fear or a misconception about what hypnosis really is. If you want to resist…you will not be hypnotized.

What are the secrets for success for hypnosis?

1. You must be motivated. You must want to be hypnotized and you must want to succeed at it. You must be able to imagine your success and believe that you will succeed.

2. You must be involved in the process. Hypnosis is not, as many believe, a passive act… it requires your full involvement and positive participation. You must apply yourself, direct your attention, and concentrate on the process.

3. You must direct your will to cooperate in order to be successful. This is not the same as wanting something to happen. You may want something to happen but if you don’t cooperate, it will not happen.

4. You must approach hypnosis with an uncritical acceptance in order to you allow suggestions to pass from your conscious into your subconscious.

I know you are going to enjoy your session. If you have any questions, I'll be more than happy to discuss them with you. Remember, hypnosis is a wonderful way to change your life…   HYPNOSIS WORKS!
